“Knowledge Shapes Our Identity” – Summary of the School of Active Citizenship

What problems exist in our city? This was the main focus of participants in the School of Active Citizenship, held on July 6-7 at Dubno Castle. The two-day intensive was organized for the second year in a row by the Dubno Community Foundation “Dobrobut” with financial assistance from the Global Fund for Community Foundations. This year, it was also supported by the Peace Corps Virtual Support Pilot Program.

“The School of Active Citizenship, as an intensive, a training program, and a method for activating civil society, is an event we plan to hold annually,” says the head of the charitable foundation, Mykola Mandziuk. “We hope for success and project submissions this year. We believe that many local ideas will be implemented with the support of the Community Foundation and our donors. We hope that the driving force behind change will be people who want good, positive news and are ready to get involved and become active members of the community.”

A total of 37 people registered for the event, and around 30 completed the training. Participants represented various communities, including: Plast Dubno, the youth space “Baza,” the NGO “Volunteer Center ‘Osnova’,” the NGO “Conscious Choice,” the Dubno branch of the University “Ukraine,” the Community of Active Women in Action, the NGO “Guardians of the Ukrainian Lineage,” and the Ukrainian Red Cross Society in Dubno. Dubno residents were trained by an experienced trainer, business consultant, and representative of the Ostroh Princes Benefactors Foundation, Ruslan Kraplych.

“This year’s School differs from previous years. First, it had a multi-age group that felt comfortable together in the course. Both young people and representatives of internally displaced persons, as well as experienced local residents, joined forces to first discuss problems and rank the most pressing issues in Dubno. Then, it wasn’t just about talking—it was crucial to plan solutions by drafting project proposals. We expect at least 3-4 projects within 72 hours,” noted Ruslan Kraplych.

It is worth noting that participants received certificates from the Dubno Community Foundation and the Peace Corps Representation in Ukraine for completing the training program.

“The thirst for knowledge is one of the most important aspects of our existence. Knowledge shapes our identity and our future. That is why I am completely satisfied with this event and give full respect to those who contributed to it,” shared participant Oleksandr Melnyk.

“First of all, I want to thank the organizers of this event, the Dubno Community Foundation ‘Dobrobut,’ and everyone who participated. I encourage active citizens of Dubno and the entire region to take part in such events because they provide knowledge, skills, and the opportunity to improve life in their community or region,” concluded Nataliya Ivanytska..
